On Looking and Belonging

Profile

Originally from Chicago, Lauren Wilson is a Toronto-based artist and a graduate of Toronto Metropolitan University, where she earned a B.A. in Creative Industries. Her practice centres on figurative work that explores diverse human experiences, shaped by a childhood spent living across Texas, England, Chicago, and Toronto. Early exposure to these varied cultural landscapes fostered a deep sensitivity to difference and connection; an awareness that continues to inform how she observes, interprets, and renders her subjects.

Through each piece, Lauren seeks to cultivate empathy, inviting viewers into an intimate exchange with the figures she portrays. Alongside figurative work, her practice is strongly influenced by the landscapes of Ireland and Canada, particularly Muskoka, Ontario, and Vancouver, British Columbia, where place and atmosphere become vehicles for reflection and emotional resonance. Her professional experience spans a wide range of creative projects, including designing album covers, exhibiting work in cultural institutions and businesses across Toronto, and illustrating two children’s books.
